The Next Best Thing

I failed to get a picture of Ezra after he climbed into the toilet but I couldn’t pass up the chance to take a picture when I found that he had climbed into the sink this morning (in the same bathroom):

Growing Children

Last night Savannah asked me what time I went out weeding in the mornings. I told her 6:00 and apparently she set her alarm for 6:30 this morning so she could join me. When she came out I was still finishing scriptures but then we went out together and I taught her the tips to pulling weeds among plants you would like to keep. So not only was I pulling weeds this morning, I was growing workers.

When I got inside I discovered that not only had I been training up a new worker I also had an audience while we were out there:

From the way Alyssa talked after we came in I have the feeling that I may soon have two kids out working beside me on some mornings.

Welcome to Katherine

I got the exciting news that I am a new uncle again as my brother and his wife had their new baby girl this morning. I expect she’s beautiful but I haven’t seen any pictures yet. On the other hand, I thought it was very funny to see the baby statistics for Katherine right above a tax advice disclaimer – as pictured above.

Congratulations to Katherine … and Mom and Dad … and Jack (big brother) and Mariann (big sister).

Family Pictures

When Enoch was born I promised to post a family picture. Things were busy enough that since we were not allowed to take the kids to visit in the hospital we never got around to taking a family picture until three weeks later when we had already scheduled family pictures of our extended family (David’s family) including individual sittings for each of the families in the group. Now it has taken another three and a half weeks to finally get the picture scanned in and posted here.

So without further ado, here is the whole family:

My New Car

My team will be moving to a new office in the coming weeks to a location that would add another hour or more each way to my commute if I kept taking the bus. I’ve known this for months so I have been thinking about the need to buy a car.

I hate the idea of a car payment and have been lucky in my previous two cars that I have been able to pay for them without a loan. This time I really worried that I would not be able to find a reasonable car for the amount of cash I figured I could afford to pay. Late last week I noticed a little truck at the side of the road along my bus route that was for sale in the right price range. That got me serious about shopping, especially when combined with the news that we would probably be moving a month earlier than I had previously expected.

After driving a couple of other cars (including the truck I had seen along the bus route) I finally found my new car:

my new explorer

It’s amazing that I could get everything I wanted at the right price. It drives well, has low miles, can hold carseats (the little truck couldn’t do that) or haul larger items, and it even has 4 wheel drive in case we ever need that on our hills. I feel very fortunate today.

Random Injury Report

I must have a knack for this kind of thing because I really doubt that puncturing a fingernail is a common type of injury. I’ve done it twice in my life now. Once when I was young (I touched a power saw that had not stopped spinning). Apparently yesterday was not exciting enough for me. I was attempting a minor repair when the board split as I was trying to screw it in place and the drill punctured my middle fingernail with a screwdriver bit. I’m really curious to see how this will heal.

My Sign

I thought it would be fun to show the sign I made for our front lawn announcing Isaac’s arrival.

Pictures as Promised

Here is the first picture I took of Isaac.

This picture was two experiments combined – first, use the self timer on the camera (I had never done that with this camera before); and second, get four children to look at the camera at the right time. I cropped the image, but this is us, today, after I brought the girls to the hospital from church.

One more of Isaac – lest we forget who’s day it is.
