Balance

In the past weeks I have been exploring my interests and finding out what I like to do with my time. It has been a nice discovery period. I now come back to a question I have had before – how do I strike the balance when there are so many things I am interested in doing, and have the opportunity to do. I see all around me the people who are doing so much that they have no life, just activities.

The best approach I have found so far to deal with this question is to choose one activity and go with it until I know whether I am too busy, or not interested enough, or if it sticks. Once I have settled the activity into, or out of, my life I can approach another area of interest.

Cell-Phone Culture

Over the course of the last year I have become very aware of what I call our cell-phone culture. Let me preface my commentary by saying that I have nothing against cell phones. I used to have one, and the day may come when I have one again, but currently I do not have one.

After moving into a new house and a new neighborhood last year, I found it hard to contact anyone in my neighborhood. I have been working with the local Boy Scout troop and I had phone numbers for most of the people but whenever I tried to contact people I could never catch them. I also discovered that there were messages being sent to “everybody” that were not coming to me. Given time I was able to diagnose the cause of both those problems. The messages I was not getting were text messages on cell phones – a loop which could not include me since I have no cell. The problem with me trying to contact anyone else was that I had their home phone numbers which were virtually useless since they all rely on their cell phones for people to contact them.

Since that first identification of the influence of cell phones on society I have identified other effects of the cell-phone culture. I see people around me busily doing much more than people did when I was growing up. There are more soccer games (or any other sport), more music lessons, and dance classes. Families are split in more directions as both parents run separate errands and any older children are busy with their own agendas. The members of the family keep each other updated on their whereabouts with calls and messages from their phones without ever having to see each other. This was all driven home to me this weekend when my backyard neighbor was talking to us over the fence. She had her phone with her and while we were talking she got a message from her oldest daughter. The daughter had gone shopping for a prom dress with the stipulation that her mother had to approve anything she wanted to buy. The message was a picture of the prom-dress-of-choice. No need for mom to come along in order to secure her approval. In fact it was not even necessary to take a picture and show it to mom for approval before going back to purchase the dress. She could go shopping and get the required approval while Mom was outside talking to the neighbors.

Not all of this is bad, but I have concluded that if and when I have a cell phone again I will be conscious to avoid cluttering up my schedule just because I can stay in contact while driving myself crazy and back.

Plan Something for Me Day

I must have missed the memo, but all signs point to today being some sort of national holiday where everyone planned things for me all on the same day. I had planned to go to the conference that I mentioned yesterday, which made it necessary to reschedule the play that my wife and I were going to see tonight (so we were even in on this whole conspiracy). After that my scout troop planned a court of honor tonight and I, as the scout committee chair, had to do the paperwork and acquire the awards for the ceremony. On top of that, it is the beginning of school and there was a class I would like to take that starts today. Then with things piling up, I learned that my cousin was getting married today – I’d sure like to go to the wedding.

Well, I got through the day although I have been running like crazy all day. I don’t mind it – just so long as it is not an annual event.

Limbo

I have been in internet limbo for the last week and then some. This is likely to continue for a little while, but things are moving fast and I should be back up and running soon (I hope).Just an overview of what has been going on – I got a new job, moved to a new state and I am in the process of finding a new house – and I have a new baby due in the next couple of weeks. I hope not to get overwhelmed.

Back on Track

I have been busy in my offline life and have not posted for a while, but I am back. I have been wanting to talk about the path, or series of events that have lead me to my current situation. It has been an interesting ride and worthy of reflection (as proven by the fact that I have so often reflected on what has brought me here already.)

I’m Back

I have finally moved to Columbia Missouri to start my PhD and I am ready to get back to blogging. During this break I have had decided to change the focus of my blog just a little bit. Previously it was almost exclusively for political commentary, but now I would like to spend a little bit more of the space discussing other things like open source software etc.

I still expect to have plenty of political and social commentary, but not quite as exclusively as before.

Update

David Anderson noted the fact that I have not been posting for a couple of weeks. In deference to the two people that read my blog I thought I should explain my current absence from the blogosphere.

I finally got my official acceptance to a PhD program at the University of Missouri to start in January so I had to quickly get into high gear to be ready to move and start the program in the next 6 weeks. I will hope to post occasionally during that time, but I appreciate the patience of those who actually care about what I have to say here.

Update on Busy-ness

I said that I could not plan a busier two weeks. Little did I know that there was more to come . . .

I now have a job interview in the middle of AECT.

Life Moves Along

I just got a response from the University of Missouri regarding my PhD application – they want to schedule a telephone interview. This is the final step in the application process and indicates that they think I am qualified based on my application so far. I am thrilled and excited.

This completes my next two weeks. Laura has a month worth of activities scheduled for tomorrow – Super Saturday, Family History Fair and two baptisms (I think I’m still missing one thing in there), I will be traveling to Virginia for work during the first part of next week and when I get back I have a presentation in class, The interview with Missouri will be on Monday the 18th and then I will be going to the AECT convention in Chicago on the 19th.

Like I said – life moves along. I could not plan a busier two weeks.

The Web is Slower Than Life

Society has grown impatient generally because of how fast computers can get things done. I remember when waiting 30 seconds for a program to load on the computer was considered acceptably fast. Now I see people complaining when they do not notice any response from the computer within 10 seconds of them trying to do something on it. I thought that computers had made things generally faster.

I have fully immersed myself into this accelerated culture and I decided that I wanted to make my website more up-to-date by maintaining it as a blog so that I could put new thoughts up as often as they happened. That required that I restructure the site so when I got a break I did so. It took less than a week for me to completely restructure the site. That is when I started looking back at what had happened since I made the decision to change the site. Savannah got run over by a car in the library parking lot (thankfully she didn’t get hurt), Alyssa started walking, Laura got hit by a second car in the same library parking lot (no damage to the cars again) and I flew down to Albuquerque to see my new niece. All of that took place in about a week.

I guess the lesson that I learned as I looked back on all of that is that we like the speed of computers because life is fast. No matter how fast computers get life is faster. The reason that we get impatient as we start becoming accustomed to the instantaneous lifestyle is that we forget that the speed of the computer gives us only the illusion of going at the pace of life and not actually the reality of going as fast as life. We’re still behind even at the speed of life.

If the speed of light is “c” (from e=m*c^2) then the speed of life, “l”, must be close to “c^2” thus e=m*l . . .
