Spam Watch – Refinance Loans

Three days ago I got a great idea from my spam email folder – wouldn’t it be funny to report the vast sums of money I have been approved for to “refinance” my house. I have since saved those refinance spam messages so that I could post the total. I thought it might also be fun to post all the lottery money I am apparently winning in random drawings. Instead I have decided that I will post any interesting information from my spam box when the fancy strikes me.

In the last 3 days I have been approved for $12,428,000 in refinance loans. The beauty of it all is that the largest of these loans is under $500,000. That’s starting to make my credit limit look puny.

Shadows of Life

While I was out running this morning my brain began to wax philosophical. I thought I’d share some of the main elements that were rolling through my brain – spurred by seeing my long shadow as the sun rose.

As I saw my long shadow (about 50 feet) I got to thinking about the shadows that people cast in their lives and through history. Interesting things about shadows include the fact that they show the shape of something but remove most of the details and the third dimension. Also interesting is the fact that they are altered by the background upon which they fall and the light from which they are generated. This last thought percolated into this post.

Our perspective on a person will change throughout their life just as a shadow changes throughout the day. In the morning it is long and heading West. In the middle of the day it is very short, or even non-existent. In the evening it is long but facing East. Likewise, we view children through the shadow of possibility that they cast. At first they cast a big shadow of virtually endless possibilities. As they grow the shadow gets shorter as they begin to hone in one specific possibilities. Later the shadow changes from a shadow of possibility to a shadow of accomplishment which grows longer over time.

Pearl of Great Price (and other parables)

In Sunday School today we were talking about the parables in Matthew 13. After the discussion I got to thinking about the parable of the pearl of great price in particular and about discussions concerning parables in general.

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it. (Matthew 13:45-46)

Many times I have heard that parable and the discussion always revolves around the idea that we should give everything to obtain such a pearl if we find it. I could hardly argue that this is wrong, but imagine if the pearl did not cost all that the merchant had – would he have sold all to obtain it if he could obtain it for less? What if all that he had were insufficient to obtain the pearl – is he out of luck?

I believe that the savior talked of him giving all that he had because in obtaining the kingdom of heaven we should never feel that it is out of reach. However, if we could obtain heaven without being asked to give up all the comforts of our lives does that make our obtaining it any less sweet? If the pearl cost more than all his goods, would this merchant have found a way to obtain the resources necessary to secure the pearl for himself? I think the real point of the story is that we must be willing to give whatever is required to obtain such a pearl, whether it turns out to be more than we think ourselves capable of giving or less than all that we have.

For me the real lesson was a reminder to look at the parables from an unconventional viewpoint because the beauty of parables is that they have so many layers of meaning waiting to be uncovered.

Interesting Idea

So, this idea of a Redesigned alphabet is apparently not new. I was intrigued by the alphabet shown on Northtemple but I but I was less impressed by the font I found from the comments under the original post. The idea is interesting, and there could certainly be some interesting alphabets generated which have identical upper and lower case, but as proven by my links, smallcaps can simulate the effect with any font available so it’s not that hard to do. I’m almost tempted to make this post in small caps to prove the point.

Odd Couple

I found this little oddity at AutoBlogger.net where there is a copyright notice including “All rights reserved” immediately before a Creative Commons License (BY-SA 2.0) giving away some of those rights. I have no problem with some rights, or even all rights reserved, but it seems either redundant or conflicting to have both.

D20

Thanks Dave. Of course I already knew

I am a d20

Take the quiz at dicepool.com

You are the large, round, friendly d20! (You probably didn’t know this, but the shape of the twenty-sided die is called an Icosahedron.) You are the friendly, outgoing, outspoken, leader of friends. You are often looked up to, even though you don’t normally deserve it. Most other types secretly wish they were you, and you’d give them tips on how, if only you had a clue yourself. Your charisma is often all you need, but you have your occasional moments of brilliance as well–just never when it’s actually needed. You are the all-around good guy, a dependable chum, a respectable foe, and an inspiration to those who need one. Who says you can’t get by on a smile and good looks alone?

It’s nice to finally have it from an official source. Of course I could also be D6, D4, or D100. You never know.
